I decided to keep some of the original content of this post from 2022 in order to make a comparison of the changes that have taken place in the last few years. It seems like the gig economy ain't giggin the way people thought it would. Companies are laying off workers in massive numbers and to top it off, it's nearly impossible to find another job. So what are people doing? They're turning to the gig economy. But it's not paying the bills. Many unemployed and employed individuals are turning to social media sites like TikTok and YouTube prophesying their employment troubles. Many are looking towards becoming content creators and/or doing side hustles like Door Dash and Uber.  Unfortunately, individuals soon discover that content creating takes a while to build up an audience and Door Dash doesn't provide enough earnings to cover the monthly bills.  What Is Meant By Gig Work?   There's been a lot of social media broadcasts concerning the massive amount of layoffs throughout the US. People are losing jobs and many are finding it difficult to find new employment.  To make things worse rents are increasing and food prices are through the roof. What's causing the mass layoffs? It's not simply because of AI. In fact, I think they're exaggerating the effectiveness of AI. How many times have you received incorrect information when you've used AI technology? But that issue is for another blog post. There are a number of reports that DOGE investigations and USAID cuts are affecting the US economy; hence, the reason for the mass layoffs and it's quite serious indeed. Large companies like USPS, Microsoft (recently laid off/fired 9000 employees, Citigroup fires 20,000 workers, Walmart, Amazon, Google, Fed Ex, Starbucks and more are laying off 1000s.
