The Gig/Freelance Economy 2025 And Beyond
It seems like the gig economy ain't giggin the way people thought it would. Companies are laying off workers in massive numbers and to top it off, it's nearly impossible to find another job. So what are people doing? They're turning to the gig economy. But it's not paying the bills.
Many unemployed and employed individuals are turning to social media sites like TikTok and YouTube prophesying their employment troubles. Many are looking towards becoming content creators and/or doing side hustles like Door Dash and Uber.
Unfortunately, individuals soon discover that content creating takes a while to build up an audience and Door Dash doesn't provide enough earnings to cover the monthly bills.
What Is Meant By Gig Work?
A gig is described as a form of temporary, short-term, or project-based work, often facilitated by digital platforms or apps, where workers are independent contractors and not permanent employees.
This type of work is usually done on the side to supplement a main-income or until you're able to generate enough earnings to leave your main job. To the dismay of many, it's not working out that way and rarely does. Many people in the gig workforce enjoy the flexibility of gig work but prefer the stability of a permanent position for a variety of reasons.
Additionally, in places like the US, a person's health insurance is tied to their job. Therefore, a lack of employee benefits, filing taxes, maintaining health insurance, and staying afloat while dealing with income fluctuations, makes gig work even more challenging than a traditional job.
As a result, the million dollar question is: what's going to happen to the gig economy? Will people be able to earn a living as AI becomes more prominent? I don't believe AI will nor can it take over every job but it will certainly raise the unemployment stats.
In the article The Future of the Gig Economy: 2025 and Beyond (honestly I didn't find this article until after I titled my blog post) the author stated that:
"Just like in the years gone by, the gig economy will be exciting but chaotic in 2025. To keep up, it's vital that freelancers continuously hone their skills, adapt to new trends and technologies, develop strong relationships with clients and peers, and plan for their financial future."
The Entrepreneur Scam
Now everyone calls themselves an entrepreneur when in fact, they're actually doing nothing different or unique compared to other industrious trends of today. The term has been completely debased.
An entrepreneur is (according to the meaning given for eons) an individual who starts their own business based on an idea they have or a product they have created while assuming most of the risks and reaping most of the rewards of the business.
The difference in 2025 is that most people who call themselves entrepreneurs have no original ideas or produce any original product. They're basically taking snips from TikTok for example, creating a channel then comment on the TikTok videos. IMHO...that's not an entrepreneur!
Or, they purchase study programs and sell them on their social media page, order t-shirts with awkward wording etc. This is not the entrepreneurship of years ago. But on the other hand I understand the hustle. Unemployment is rapidly increasing and there are bills that need to be paid.
More Gig Economy Insights
Additional insights affirm that the gig economy is not just a side hustle anymore. By 2025, the global gig workforce is projected to exceed 1.6 billion people, accounting for 12% of the total global labor market. This massive expansion highlights the growing demand for flexible, project-based work.
Undoubtedly there is an explosion of gig workers that won't be slowing down anytime soon. People want to make money fast and seeing that the job market is so tight, the only means of legitimately making fast money is via gig jobs. In addition, not everyone is cut-out to be a business owner or entrepreneur.
